Technology
Pimcore is a web-based application and employs the PHP programming language and the MySQL/MariaDB relational database management system. Pimcore's component based core architecture can be described as a best of breed use of the Symfony Project and leading PHP architectural patterns and components such as composer. Pimcore applies the conventions of object-oriented programming, model-view-controller architecture and the latest PHP programming paradigms like namespaces and traits. Pimcore strictly adheres to PHP coding standards and follows the rules and recommendations of the PHP Framework Interop Group (PSR 1,2,3,4 & 7).
Since the first Pimcore release in 2010 Pimcore has followed a strict API driven approach, by offering both a PHP based core API and open RESTful APIs for all available functionalities and integrations to 3rd party applications. The core of Pimcore is extensible through extensions, content components and applications utilizing the APIs. Pimcore includes an administrative backend interface for managing data and system configuration. The whole interface is powered by the Sencha ExtJS 6 framework providing the graphical user interface for Pimcore.
Products
Pimcore's product is a portfolio focused on multi-domain master data management, omni-channel e-commerce and user experience management. The whole software platform composed of product information management (PIM), web content management (CMS), digital asset management (DAM) and e-commerce is dual-licensed and available under the free and open-source GPLv3 and the proprietary PEL (Pimcore Enterprise) licenses. Pimcore is currently (May 2016) used more than 80.000 times in 174 different countries and has been translated to 20 different languages.
Master data management/Product information management
Pimcore's MDM/PIM is built for managing master data in a central location. Pimcore enables users to configure complex multi-domain data models and to consolidate data from multiple sources and formats. Pimcore's data models are powered by more than 40 data entry components that are able to solve complex, multi-domain data modeling scenarios including text, media, relations and classifications (ecl@ss, GS1, BMEcat,...). Manage product data, including hierarchy, structure, validations, versioning and enriching master data with attributes, descriptions, translations, documentation and other related data.
Web content management
Pimcore features single-source and multi-channel publishing functionality to manage information and to integrate content and data from various sources. With Pimcore, users can create and manage digital experiences for various output channels: Web, mobile, apps, social platforms, print, digital signage and can act as a platform for content-as-a-service (CAAS) strategies.
Digital asset management
The pimcore digital asset management platform enables consistent management, tagging, enrichment and sharing of any amount of digital media assets in any format. It is able to integrate into existing IT landscapes for uploading digital assets or for delivering data in the right format to the right output channel.
E-commerce framework
The Pimcore Commerce framework is a component based programming framework for creating B2B and B2C e-commerce applications in a rapid application development methodology based on defined APIs.
Pimcore suite
The Pimcore Suite, combining PIM, CMS, DAM and Commerce in one suite, positions itself as an open source solution for consolidating IT application landscapes, by reducing the amount of needed applications for different domains. In that sense Pimcore is an advocate for integrated and homegenious systems, rather than a best-of-breed approach.
Software requirements
Pimcore is a web application, requiring a compatible HTTP server and a SQL database. As of version 5.0 (September 28, 2017), the requirements for pimcore are as follows:
- nginx or Apache v2.2+ with mod_rewrite
- MySQL v5.5+
- PHP 7.1+ with FPM / FastCGI or mod_php
Usability
pimcore has been criticized for being difficult to use out of the box. Effective use requires an understanding of the Zend Framework.
